Almost every store sells the same red and gold baubles for Christmas. Beautiful, safe, and exactly the same as the store three doors down. For the customer who walks in, there's little reason to buy from you instead of the garden center or Action.
That's a shame, because for most stores, Christmas is the quarter where the money really rolls in. And precisely then, you end up competing on a product that's the same everywhere, and therefore on price.
The question isn't "which Christmas baubles should I buy in," but "which Christmas baubles give someone a reason to buy." Here's how to approach that.
Start with one eye-catcher, not with volume
Your collection doesn't need two hundred models. It needs a few pieces that people will take a picture of. One product that tells a story helps sell the rest of your shelf. The customer comes in for the bauble they didn't see anywhere else, and walks past all your other Christmas items.
So, choose your eye-catcher first. Only then the complementary items.
Focus on impulse gifts, not on the tree
You buy an ordinary Christmas bauble for your own tree. You buy a special one for someone else. The latter is a much bigger and more profitable moment: it's a gift, and you buy gifts based on emotion, not price.
The sweet spot is around fifteen euros. High enough to count as a real gift, low enough to take three with you. Our retail price of €14.95 is deliberately set exactly there.
Let the product do the work
An eye-catcher sells itself on your counter and on social media. We make Christmas baubles of Dutch "pauper classics": a fatbike, a doner roll, a can of beer, and a host of other designs. Hand-blown and hand-painted, so it looks surprisingly beautiful on the tree. "Tokkie-goud," but beautifully made.
Customers give these to each other because it makes them laugh, and they share it in group chats. That's free advertising for your store, not ours.
Count on margin, not on sales
A distinctive gift item doesn't need to go on sale. It sells on its own story, at the full retail price, with the margin you expect from a gift. That's precisely the opposite of the red-bauble race to the bottom.
